David DeSantos talks ‘Ray Donovan’ season 2, ‘When the Game Stands Tall’
The legacy of the De La Salle football program comes to theaters with When the Game Stands Tall and actor David DeSantos talks with Dispatch Radio in an exclusive interview about the film, his role and bringing the story to life.
DeSantos portrays conditioning coach Mike Belasquez, who he credits for the program’s success behind the masterful coach Bob Ladouceur and the program’s record winning streak of 151 games. Director Thomas Carter (Coach Carter) utilizes a great cast (Jim Caviezel, Michael Chiklis, Laura Dern, Alexander Ludwig and Clancy Brown) to bring the De La Salle to life.
Caviesel was just so focused, David says, noting there was “no break in character” while Chiklis was just “so prepared…so playful.” He also details the efforts for realism, the “spring training” for the players and shooting in the brutal heat of New Orleans.
David also stars on Showtime’s hit show Ray Donovan alongside Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight as Carlos, the obejct of Ann Margret’s affection – Carlos. “I’m living out my grandfather’s, my uncle’s dream” he jokes about playing Carlos before sharing engaging and amazing stories about the famous actress.
She “blew me away,” he says of the Tommy actress. You won’t likely forget the Keith Moon story.
David talks about several other projects, The Oregon Shakepeare Festival and growing up in an “industry family” where his grandmother was an editor on Gunsmoke and Hawaii Five-O and his father was the assistant film editor on Star Trek III: The Search For Spock. He recounts screening with Trek film with Leonard Nimoy at a Paramount lot.
This great interview concludes with a lot more personal insight, learning that life/career is “no sprint, it’s a marathon.”
