“We do a lot of events. I try to keep it to a minimum, not being away from the kids too much,” she explained during an interview with The Global Dispatch.
“It’s great to get to pick and choose. My priorities are God, Nic and the two kids. I can still home with my son, who is still excited to do homework (Laughs).”
A lot has changed since the recording of “On My Knees” and while fans may hold that song dear in their hearts, Jaci explains her journey in music.
“Every song has a different place in my heart and in my life. The first record was recorded when I was fifteen years old, so I had different thoughts, different things in my life…different prayers,” she says before admitting that God Loves You from the Touched by an Angel Soundtrack has a special place for her.
“I love that song so much. My son will have me sing it to him while I put him to sleep every night…Yeah, that one has a special place in my heart.”
Staying busy would barely describe Velasquez’s life as a wife, mom, recording artist and a radio host. Two kids, one six and one four, require a balance, which she says is the key.
“Balance is the key. In reality we do our best. Staying in communication…to say ‘You’re loved. I’m loved’ It’s a team. The kids need both of us, need to see us support one another 100%,” Velasquez says. “Some days are better than others. You tell yourself ‘I was not a good mom today. I let things take time away’ and other days are great and you spend good quality time with your husband and kids.”
The aforementioned radio show, Family Friendly Radio Show, with Doug Griffin, finds her at a great time in her life.
“It makes sense. I couldn’t do it before having kids because I can relate to my demographic. I know these women. I know what’s happening. If they call in and the kid’s in the van screaming, I get that. (LAUGHS)”
“I like it ‘cause the kids are there are doing ok.”
Griffin brings 27 years in radio and Velasquez spoke about how different the role is compared to the role of performer.
“It’s such a different world being on the other side. It makes me happy to be part of people’s lives and I don’t have to put makeup on. (LAUGHS)”
Velasquez continues: “I’m not the type to tell you about what’s going on in the industry. I’d rather talk about making a gingerbread house with the boys, how it fell on the floor and broke. My son is crying and I’m like ‘Don’t worry, we’ll eat it now’…that’s my thing.”
She has a role in a film called Rumors of War, playing the “spiritual matriarch’ and recounted a difficult time shooting the film as both the boys got the flu and how it hit her while filming.
“You gotta put your big pants on, but inside you just wanna die.”
Velasquez bridges the gap between motherhood and recording with her Buenos Noches Mi Sol Spanish lullaby album, which she says she’s “most proud of…”
“I feel so honored and privileged to sing babies to sleep. Moms let me have that opportunity…I’m inspired.”
